These very clear quartz specimens are a kind of quartz called Faden quartz, from the German for "thread quartz", as this quartz shows a white line or thread running through them. This is because the quartz forms in cracks in rock, and as the crack gradually widens the quartz is cracked and pulled apart, growing again to fill in the fracture and leaving a white "scar". The left hand specimen is so clear that you can see the gold coloured stand through it!
