A genuine fossil ammonite from Morocco, halved and polished. Part of the mineralization of this specimen is hematite, which has polished up to a shiny black which then defines the lighter coloured mineralization of the shell chambers. The colours are natural. The fossil is discretely glued to a gold coloured base.
Ammonites are extinct relatives of modern day nautiloids and squid. The largest known ammonite in the world would have been 8 1/2 feet (2.59 metres) across if it were complete!
3/4 inch (1.9 cm) wide,1/4 inch (0.6 cm) deep, 5/8 inch (1.6 cm) tall.
