Ruby, July birthstone

A real rough ruby from Kashmir, India.  Rubies naturally crystallise in a hexagonal, six sided form and this specimen shows it beautifully.  It is a little asymmetric, as nature often is.  As far as I know the colour is natural; gem quality stones are sometimes heat treated to improve their colour and clarity.  The crystal is mounted on a base of mother-of-pearl and black onyx.  Ruby is a July birthstone.

1/2 inch (1.3 cm) wide, 3/8 inch (0.95 cm) deep and 7/16 inch (1.1 cm) tall.
