These tiny crystal sceptres are a natural form for amethyst, and they just made me think of fantasy toadstools!  So there of three of them, in various shades of purple, nestled in amongst preserved greenery under a glass cover.  After I took the photos I glued the cover in place but with a water soluble glue, so if you would like to remove the dome just carefully and patiently apply some water to the seal and gently remove the cover.

Amethyst is a form of quartz, with its colour coming from the presence of iron impurities that have then been irradiated naturally.  It can lose colour if exposed to bright sunlight, and if it is heated enough it changes colour to resemble citrine (another colour form of quartz).  It's name comes from the Greek for "not intoxicate" as it was believed to prevent drunkenness!  Amethyst is a February birthstone.

1 inch (2.5 cm) in diameter and 1 1/4 inches (3.2 cm) tall.
